Re: please asses my speaking.

Hi Mohammed, As Larry pointing out before, you are a very strong speaker. I think I caught that your goal is band 7, and I think you very likely will achieve this. You've likely posted this response here for tips on how to put that final polish on your speaking. Here are a few areas you can work on:...

Re: American English

Hi Mohammed, Yes, sounding natural can enhance your score, and the lingo you've shared is very common among native English speakers. However, it is important to remember that these sorts of words will only help if you sound natural while using them. My advice is to avoid overusing this sort of wordi...

Great news, Chi! I'm so happy all of your hard work paid off. I'm not at all surprised about the writing band 7.5. The pieces you've shared here clearly demonstrate your strength as a writer of English. Yes, I can imagine how good it must feel to say "goodbye" to the IELTS forever. :D Cong...

Hitting 250 words really isn't that difficult if you have a solid structure in mind. Here are a few videos that can help: Argument essay structure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gypxjrvfmjc Discussion essay structure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrdSCPXJhkA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yGYmI0...

Re: New member

Hi NurseM, Quite the story. I'm sorry to hear about the 6. Assuming your grammar was OK, it's likely that structure, tone and/or a misunderstood question caused the poor performance. If you recall your Task 1 and 2 questions, please share them here. You may be interested to listen to a conversation ...

Re: Block capitals in the writing test

Hi ccc812, Don't use block capitals in your writing. Writing an essay in all caps is a grammatical and stylistic no-no. Printing or cursive is fine. Using all caps on your listening test, however, is acceptable. Varun talks about this strategy in my chat with him here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

This is a great idea for a thread, Chi. Thank you for starting it. The Hobbit! That was one of my all time favourite books as a child. I should make time to read it again. Thanks for the reminder. ;) The last book I read unrelated to work would be Dubliners. It's a group of short stories that take p...

Re: Are the questions repeated?

Hi Mari, I honestly can't remember a time when I saw a question repeated word for word; however, there definitely appears to be some repetition of theme. Over the years, topics to do with technology and education pop up now and then. Pollution and humanity's relationship to it has also had a few app...

Hi Allen, Nice to meet you. I've been to Shenzhen several times. It's a very exciting part of China. Assuming this was your first attempt at the IELTS, those scores are quite impressive. Band 7 in all sections is a realistic goal for you. A couple quick pieces of advice: 1. Do you have an IELTS spea...

Hi Dutchgirl, I also think you are going to do well on the exam. As Larry points out, you clearly speak with fluency and use fitting vocabulary to communicate your ideas. For an off the cuff response, I felt this demonstration was exceptional. A couple of constructive points: -"In the end of 20...

Re: "To what extent…" questions

^Good points, Larry. I think a common misconception IELTS takers have is that they feel they need to show some support for the opposing point in their argument essay. What unfortunately happens in this scenario is that the essay starts to contradict its thesis, and this won't do much for the Task Ac...

Re: Finally, I nailed it....Each band 7 and over !!

Hi Zarema,

I don't think the road to success is easy for anyone. What are your study strategies? If you are practicing regularly but not seeing improvement, then there could be something counterproductive with the way you are preparing for the exam.

Re: Can you backpack with a business visa?

Hi Chi, I guess rules would vary from one country to another, but I think that so long as your sponsor doesn't mind you using your business visa for leisure you could probably get away with it. Here in Qatar, it's common for people to come on a business visa and then use their time in the country to...
