Topic: Convenience foods will become increasingly prevalent and eventually replace traditional foods and traditional methods of food preparation. Do you agree or disagree with the above statement?
Some people argue that the modern society encourages the prevalence of convenience foods, and eventually these convenience foods will substitute traditional foods and traditional methods of food preparation. For me, I partly agree with this point of view.
I agree that convenience foods have been becoming prevalent because of our increasingly hectic working schedules. Our spare time has been tighter and tighter, so we are prone to choose ready-to-eat foods in order to save time. A traditional food usually takes at least two hours to prepare and cook, whereas a frozen-packaged meal needs only ten minutes to heat up. Moreover, many fast-food restaurants such as McDonald’s or KFC have grown up in every corner of streets, allowing people to grab a meal easily in just few steps.
However, I do not think convenience food will replace traditional foods and traditional methods of food preparation. First of all, convenience foods receive criticisms over the concerns of nutrition. Many people argue that ready-to-eat foods contain high fat, sugar, salt, and additive content which likely cause obesity and other health problems. Second, tertiary processed foods cannot bring the same cosy atmosphere as home cooking from scratch. With home cooking, a cook can convey more love and care to his or her beloved people. Third, it is quite certain that convenience foods are more expensive than traditional foods because convenience foods consume more labour and costs to process further and then package.
In conclusion, I accept that the prevalence of convenience foods has been increasing thanks to its time saving and convenience. However, they are still far from replacing traditional foods, at least in this period of time.
