1. Find your current level.
2. Work out the amount of improvement required.
3. Make a systematic method for improvement, such as regular reading exams, etc..
All the best.

Hi Online English Teacher,
Thank you for your reply. I was actually looking for an extensive answer for example the names of websites or books I can read to get prepared.
Thanks

Here are some free sites:
1. http://www.IELTS-blog.com
2. http://www.dcielts.com
3. http://www.ielts-exam.net
4. http://www.ieltspodcast.com
5. http://www.onlineenglishteacher.org/IELTS (my site)
It may not be 100% necessary to buy any books (depending on the student's level), if your preparation is going well (Ryan sells some) - check out Ryan's videos also: "https://www.youtube.com/user/EnglishRyan" - I heard positive feedback.

I agree that you need to take a diagnostic test first to know your strengths and weakness in the four components of the IELTS test. In that way, focus more the weakness but don't forget to empower your strengths:

Re: Starting IELTS preparation
you need to determine your approximate level first. if you are around band 5 study language.
if you are over band 6, strategies might help you get an extra half a band or so. but the main determinant of your ielts score is your overall language abilty i.e. what you USE in the test, not just what you know
If you are over band 6, then start using the cambrige book IELTS practice series for practice materials
you can also search on youtube for ielts6plus videos for speaking preparation if you are more advanced.
If you are around band 5 or lower, just keep working on your language skills, especially vocabulary which affects all areas of the test
