teaching foreign language in primary vs teaching in secondary school

Post by ucheoma »

SOME EXPERTS BELIEVE THAT IT IS BETTER FOR CHILDREN TO BEGIN LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AT PRIMARY SCHOOL RATHER THAN SECONDARY SCHOOL.
DO THE ADVANTAGES OF THIS OUTWEIGH THE DISADVANTAGES.

Multilingualism have over the past been considered an asset for anyone. There have been a debate as to whether to start teaching children foreign language from primary school or to postpone the teaching during the secondary school level. This essay will analyze both views and come up with a conclusion

One school of thought have criticized learning foreign language at primary school on the view that it will distract very young children whom should be busy trying to learn more important topics that will shape their future. Also, teachers have sighted that finding a suitable timetable to fix classes for new language will be difficult. They argue that the curriculum for the primary school have already been fixed and will be difficult to squeeze in a foreign language into the timetable

The other school of thought welcomes learning language from primary school as a welcome development. According to them, a child’s brain is like a computer and children learn fast hence there will be no problem in their ability to grasp a new tongue. More so, this new language will be innate in them as teaching it at secondary school will be difficult when they have already acquired the basic or simple language of the community. Another advantage will be that learning of new language comes with learning the culture of owners of the language, which will be an addendum to their academic and social life. Lastly, there is much benefit of bilingualism or multilingualism as it will help the child and improve his employability in the future since most company nowadays want people who speak different language.

All in all, after analyzing both views, the plus side of knowing different languages is better than having a single language. Teaching a foreign language earlier in the primary school is better than having it taught at high school. This idea should be encouraged

Hello!

First main paragraph - Those seem like weak arguments. Why can't the timetable be changed? Why are other subjects more important than learning a foreign language?

Second main paragraph - Why are these factors true for secondary school and not for primary school?

Overall, the question has not really been answered. Points are almost completely unclear and unsupported. Grammatical structures and vocabulary are limited in range.

All the best,
