What are the advantages and disadvantages of using CCTV cameras to fight crime?
Nowadays, there has been a significant increase in CCTV usage. Their main aim is to control crimes. However, in spite of being beneficial to some extent, there are many drawbacks for them. In this essay, I will explain both the pros and cons for CCTV cameras, will reach to my personal opinion.
Let's begin with the advantages of CCTV cameras; one of the top causes for their use is the ability to record daily activities done in areas which are more subject to crimes. It is now very common to be seen in shops, malls and car parks even in some countries almost all the streets covered by the scope of cameras. For example, we faced a murder crime in one of the biggest malls in UAE last year, and It was really amazing how police could track the murderer even though she was face-covered. Another advantage is that the use of cameras allows more discipline. For many, they are not following rules unless by law. For instance, traffic rules in some countries hard to be achieved in the absence of Radars and cameras.
Turning to the disadvantages, the wide spread of their use can dramatically affect personal privacy. Once I starting my job as a Physician, I was surprised to see cameras all over the hospital so that I feel being watched all my day, In spite of the fact that their use in hospitals has its reason which mainly related to patient and staff safety.
To sum up, usage of cameras has its ups and downs. It is clear that their use has a vital role in fighting crimes, however, it should not affect our privacy. In my view, I totally agree to their use but not in all places.
