band scores in the writing test.

Hello Ryan and everyone,

My question is about calculating band scores in the writing test.If a task 1 gets a 7 and task 2 gets a 6.5,then what will the overall score for the writing test?

I know that a score of task 2 worths 2 times more than task 1,but I don't know how to calculate it.

Hi Mohammed,

As you know, the exact recipe for calculating the overall writing band is not made public. However, former examiner Chris Green from http://ielts-yasi.englishlab.net/ has put together a wonderful chart to help shed some light (I am attaching a copy of the chart to this reply). I think below table gives you exact band score,

(task 1 + task multiply with 2)/3

if you have task 1 band 7 and task 2 band 6.5


(7 + 6.5 x 2 )/2

(7 + 13 )/2 = 20/3= 6.66, so band 6.5

if you get task 1 band 6.5 and task 2 7, then overall you get band 7. ( but it contradicts above table at some places)

I would generally assume and also may have possibly read before that task 2 being longer would likely give a higher overall grade than task 1 .
