Real Task 2 Academic Exam Question From 12/2014 IELTS -Road Safety

Post by EnglishLover »

To reduce the number of accidents on roads, minimum age requirement for acquiring the driver’s licence should be increased.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Some people think that increasing the minimum age required for getting the driver’s licence may help to lower the number of tragedies happen on roads. I agree with this view point up to some extent, as there are other facts that need to be considered to ensure the road safety.

There could be many reasons why demanding age rise would benefit to lower the amount of road accidents. It is true that with the age most people’s behaviours change and they would act in a more matured way than when they were teenagers. For example, 25 years or older persons most probably would not tend to drift through the lanes to make their journey faster, which may eventually contribute to fewer mishaps. Also, most middle-aged people are married and have children making them responsible adults. So when they are driving and carrying beloved ones as passengers, for example, they would think twice and decide not to exceed speed limits. Thus, roads would be safer.

However, I absurd argue that there are thousands of collisions happening the world over each day even the drivers are in their mid 30s or 40s. So other factors could be affecting the safety on roads. Addictions such as alcoholism and drug use could be major causes for increasing the risk of accidents. For an instance, intoxicated driver has diminished mental and physical control and these may cause for loss of properties, serious injuries and even killing on roads. Strict punishments for these drivers could reduce the disasters. Education is vital as new road rules are being introduced especially for older generation that acquired the licence many years ago. So the road accidents could be reduced.

In conclusion, I believe increase of age requirement for the driver’s licence has positive effects on accidents while other measures are equally important.

Hello!

Overall, a good essay. Plenty of very good vocabulary - intoxicated, diminished, drift. Grammar isn't great, but mistakes do not affect meaning. Organisation is clear and ideas are good.

Well done!
