word range in writing section. I NEED AN urgent responce.

Post by ardakNU »

TASK 1. If, for example, in the task one is picture or process, like gas exchange between animal snd plants or water or green house effect, can I use such words like photosynthesis, cellular respiration, autotroph(as a synonym for plant) or heterotrophs or any other words which is not familiar for everyone? Can I add some extra information which is also not given in the conclusion part related to the task.
TASK 2. Usage words like heavy metals, lead, formaldehyde, benzene, asthma, stroke, myocardial infarction and to name a few- in case of essay about pollution or diseases.
will my band score be higher or lower due to utilizing such words?
in addition, you say in the video 'i don't know what to write. task 2' that in the conclusion we should write our suggestions about the topic. is it obligatory for all types of essay, i mean, if we should give benefits and drawbacks of something, do we have to write the suggestions in the conclusion.

Hello ardakNU,

I'm not an ielts specialist but I don't see why you should get a lowered band for using wider range of vocabulary. However, context always matters. If you could post the essay itself with these words used in it, that would be easier to judge.

Hi ardakNU,

I agree with Adam here. So long as your vocabulary is appropriate and in keeping with what the Task 1 data is presenting, you should be fine. Don't go off on a tangent talking about things unrelated to your data source.

Regarding Task 2, don't assume that simply using certain groupings of words will instantly win you marks. You need to demonstrate that you can use academic vocabulary in context and with grammatical accuracy. Do not memorize responses. Commit structures to memory and then adapt them to your own writing style.

Regarding conclusion paragraphs, you do not have to write suggestions. However, suggestions and/or recommendations can often act as nice closers to your piece.
