Task2: Would the advantage of such an educational policy outweigh the disadvantage?

Post by ALSA »

Modern societies need specialists in certain fields, but not in others.
Some people therefore think that governments should pay university fees for students who study subjects that are needed by society. Those who choose to study less relevant subjects should not receive government funding.
Would the advantage of such an educational policy outweigh the disadvantage?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.

Countries nowadays require more advanced knowledge in cretin fields like science, engineering, mathematics and technology. For that some people believe that governments should waive the tuition fees for those who study these subjects to encourage students to specialize on these fields. Those people also believe that governments should not pay the tuition fees for students who choose to study other subjects like humanities and liberal arts. This essay will discuss the advantage and disadvantage of this plan.
The main advantage of making these programs free for students is to increase the number of students who select to study these programs as many students would be able to afford it. Encouraging more students is a key aspect towards shifting countries to be a mature economic force. Students would help to diversify countries resources and profits and thus countries would increase its exports and reduce the number of imported products. For example, in 1980’s China sponsored hundreds of its students to study overseas in countries like United State of America, United Kingdom and Canada, when they return, after finishing their degree, they help building a solid foundation for China economy. China now considers one of the biggest markets for investment. As it discussed above, making study free in the field that country needs is beneficial as it helps diversify the countries’ resources of income.
The disadvantage of this approach is that at a certain point of time the job market would not be able to offer jobs to all job seekers, as the number of people seeking out career opportunities would outweigh the number of job vacancies. That happened in Saudi Arabia, the root of the problem started in 1960s when the Saudi governments offered students who graduated with a degree in education a home and monetary prize. By 1990, the number of job seeker exceeded the available job vacancies and the government stopped its funding program and closes some college programs. This problem increased the unemployment rate among citizens who have a degree in teaching. As it shows supporting some program could increase the competency and the unemployment rate.
As discuss above, making the fields that countries need most, free of charge has both advantages and disadvantage but the advantage outweigh the disadvantage.

Hello!

I like this question! So many angles!

The Chinese example is not that good as over half the students didn't return to China.

Unemployment in Saudi is often the result of imported labour reducing wages, an unwillingness for many Saudis to do particular jobs, and in education, the poor training they receive..

Overall, a reasonable essay. The points are developed, but the logic of the points is not entirely clear, especially in the second main paragraph.

There is a good range of grammatical structures and not too many errors. The range of vocabulary is also good.

All the best,
David
