Obesity is often considered symbolic of a decline in health and fitness. The rise in average weight of people is a concern in some countries. The reasons of this problem are various and steps should be taken to tackle them. These issues would be explained in the following discussion.

There are varied causes of a rise in people’s weight. Firstly, people rely majorly on junk food nowadays. Due to busy lifestyles, they are finding little time for preparing traditional meals and so, they depend on junk food, which is readily available. Secondly, there has been a surge in sedentary mode of work with the advent of computers. People spend a lot of office hours in front of a computer. This bears grave consequences for an individual’s health and fitness. Thirdly, a major reason for increase in weight is a lack of exercise. Due to heavy routines, people do not have the will power and motivation to hit the gym on a regular basis.

Numerous steps can be taken to remedy the issues presented in the preceding paragraph. Healthy measures should be promoted through creating awareness among the public. For example, commuters should be encouraged to travel to work by a bicycle. They should be advised to use stairs instead of an elevator. Similarly, the importance of a healthy and balanced diet should be highlighted in electronic and print media. Finally, doctors should play a role in educating the public of the adverse effects of an increase in weight. This can be done by doing seminars in schools and offices.

In conclusion, the dire results on health and fitness, posed by the progressing weight of people, should be taken into account and steps should be taken to tackle the causes of this problem.
