Universities should take the same number of men & women in each major.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Gender equality has always been a highly debated topic. This is especially true in case of educational institutions that have gender equality as one of the core values. Universities, in particular, seem divided between the idea that the allocation of course seats should be merit based and the one that it should take gender into consideration. I find the latter proposition to be a one that is harmful not only on an individual level but also on a collective one.

The first flaw in this approach is that it can be unfair to some potential students. A more deserving candidate with higher aptitude and grades may be left out just because of the particular gender he belongs to. Thus, what may seem like gender equality may actually be gender based inequality in disguise.

The second objection pertains to certain professions where the quality of the service provided is crucial. Take, for instance, the field of medicine; the profession is deeply intertwined with the health of the society, and any compromise within the university admission process for this field has a direct effect upon something as crucial as health. Thus, imposing gender as the basis for admission can be a harmful practice on the collective level as well.

In conclusion, it can be said that this approach which potentially sidelines individual’s capabilities is a compromise with the overall wellbeing of the society, and Universities should have no place for this practice as it deepens , however unintentionally, the imaginary difference between the two genders; something a pinnacle education institute that is university should seek to erase completely, and not maintain.
