Qn:The graph shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Ans:The given graph illustrates the amount of goods transported by four different methods of transport in UK from 1974 to 2002.

It is quite evident from the graph that the most accepted method of goods transport was by roadways.Initially,in 1974 they used to transport around 70 million tones by roadways, then the amount dropped a little in 1982,further it had a drastic rise to nearly 100 million tones in the year 2002,after some fluctuations. In the case of waterways, which was the second most favourable method, the initial amount was nearly 40 million tones, which was peaked to almost 60 million by the end of 1980s,remained a stable position till 1994 and after a slight decrease in 1998,it rose drastically to more than 60 tones in 2002.

Next to waterways was the railways, rail route remains a steady position of 40 million tones throughout the period of 28 years despite some small fluctuations in between.Pipeline, which was the least preferred method, had a slight increase throughout the entire period of 28 years from nearly 5 million tones to 22 million tones.

To conclude, throughout the period of 28 years roadways was the most preferred way and pipeline was the least preferred method to transport goods in England
