Mobile phones and the Internet are very useful. However, it is rare for old people to use them. What ways could mobile phone and the Internet be useful to old people? How does the old people to be encouraged using this new technology?

It is very common for young people using mobile phones and the Internet, but it is the case for elderly people. Many believe that this results from their limited learning abilities since they are aging. It would bring them great convenience if they knew how to use these new technologies.

The greatest benefit that the aged can enjoy from using mobile phones is the mobility, which facilities the users making phone calls and sending SMS any time anywhere within the signal coverage areas. This is extremely important to old people, because they may have emergency situations such as getting lost and having a heart attack; with a mobile phone, they can contact their family or call the police and ambulance immediately.

Additionally, having video chats through the Internet can definitely impress the elderly people whose siblings or offspring live far away from them, as they can see and talk to each other as if they were physically present. Moreover, quite a lot of retired people are developing their new hobbies; with the help of the online resources, they can easily practice dancing, painting and gardening at home.

Speaking of the ways that encourage elderly people adapting to these new innovations, mobile phone manufacturers could simplify the operation of smart phones, maintaining the core functions, so that the aged users would not get confused by redundant functions; young family members could set up the Internet connection for their aged relatives, including the cables, router and computer settings.

In conclusion, elderly people should not be kept out of modern technology for ridiculous reasons such as bad memories and slow reactions. They are capable for using mobile phones and surfing the Internet as long as they are provided with more considerate products and given sufficient guidance.
