The graph illustrates the proportion of men and women workers involved in various professions in terms of gender and types of jobs in the UK for a particular year of 2005.
The most striking point was the participation of women in administrative and secretarial job. The figure was 22 percent compared to just above 5 percent of men. Conversely, the skilled trades comprised of far greater number of men than women did. One in four men were engaged as skilled manpower in trades business compared to a tiny number of female.
Nonetheless, more women involvement also seen in personal service, where nearly 14 percent were present, but only 2 percent men took it as their job. Similarly, other service-oriented jobs such as sales and customer and associates and technical service were the most favorite among women than men. The percentages were 12%, 15% for women and 5%, 13% for men respectively.
On the other hand, higher numbers of men were took their job at managerial and executive post at office (18%), as a machine operator at industries (14%), professional (14%) and elementary worker (12%). Interestingly, the figures of the women who chose their career in managerial, professional and elementary sectors were the same. The figure was 11% for each.
Overall, men took more physically and mentally demanding jobs whereas women preferred the professions, which were less, labour intensive and comfortable in nature.
