Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
There is no denying that attaining another country’s language is of pivotal importance in preparing one well prepared for the future. Some people, however, contend that teaching a foreign language to students at elementary school is more effective than educating them at the secondary school level. In my view, this notion has several strong elements which will be explored below.
One of the most predominant aspects of imparting a foreign language in the student at early age is that young children grasp new things easily than their older counterparts. As such, many of them, if not all, are at their optimum stage of learning and adopting new languages. Apparently, by using language games as spelling bee younger can be taught more effectively, thanks to the technology brought a great revolution in the conventional method of teaching. Not only does it help augment their mental development, but it also broadens their horizons. For instance, many studies show that students at early age posses high ability to discover innovative things. Besides, young learners entail exploring their more and more thoughts of other’s custom, culture, language and the like.
On the other hand, there are some pitfalls that can easily overwhelm the potential benefit of coaching foreign language to the student at secondary level, be it too many compulsory subject and extra curriculum actives imposed by the school, thus it become arduous for them indulging in to another extra language. Needless to say, the level of stress senior students bear that make it difficult for them to focus on another language.
To conclude, it is evident from the argument outlined above, one can say that it is much convenient to tutor foreign language at the young age. Teaching another language or introducing a subject to students at secondary school is only going to hamper their psychological potential.
