Task2 Writing - Is Art a useful subject at schools

Hi Guys,

I am preparing IELTS GT task2 writing. There is a typical topic regarding arts. Here is my essay, your comments are much appreciated. Let me know what score band it's sitting if you can as well.

Topic: Some people think that art is an essential subject for children at school while others think it is a waste of time.
Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

There has been discussion on the importance of art subject at school. Some people even think it is a waste of time from a practical perspective. In my opinion, art is an essential subject and school children should keep a balance of their subject selection especially at the relatively early stage of their education.

Although art as a subject often is considered not as practical or beneficial as science or technology subjects, people tend to ignore its fundamental benefit of promoting imagination and developing creativity. There are a large number of people who succeed in science and technology field also benefit from art subject taught at earlier stage of their life. For example, Steve Jobs said in one of his speeches that Mac would have never had multiple type-faces or proportionally spaced fonts if he had never dropped in the calligraphy course in college. Art can often be a stimulus of human innovation rather than a useless subject.

Offering art subject at school can also help people find the individuals who are particularly gifted in their creative abilities. Most talented artists have found their particular gift through art education in their childhood, then developed their potential into a huge success at later stage of their career. This would certainly not happen if art subject was not available or removed from school curriculum.

In conclusion, art is equally important to school children comparing to science and technology in school education system. A good balance of their curriculum will be beneficial for their future success.
