Q. Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the place to learn this. Discuss both these views and give you own opinion.

Being a good member of society involves having a good character and being able to contribute positively to society. Such skills need to be learnt as they do not come with us when we are born. This can be taught in the home environment by parents or during school hours.

Parents could be the right teacher for their children education as they are perceived as a role model to them. To be specific, those offspring spend a number of years with their parents until going to school, and they tend to imitate and follow parent’s behavior and thoughts; hence, adults could teach their kids basic learnings, including table manner, public etiquette, conscience, and study habit. In this regard, Bill Gates’ success would be an example. According to many interviews, he attributed his wealth and fame to his reading habit which was taught by his parents when he was young. Because of this, he was able to develop a sense of imagination. Therefore, parents should shoulder the responsibility of educating their children to be an upright individual.

By contrast, the school is optimized for children as there are many qualified teachers who have experienced a lot. Indeed, they have a certificate in dealing with many children and instructing academic learnings to children; therefore, they could effectively take care of children. Furthermore, such institutions can lead children to learn social skills because the places consist of different types of people from various backgrounds. By taking part in team activities and competition, children could learn how to share their opinion and negotiate with others, which in turn, they could be psychologically and mentally well grown up.

In conclusion, even though both have their own grounds, in my opinion, the role of parents are more influential than other institution and peers to lead their children to be a right member of society. This is because kinds' conscience and morality tend to be learnt during their early age.
