WRITING TASK 1

The graph presents information about how many goods were transported in the UK from 1974 to 2002 by four means of transport.
The figure for goods transported by road remained the highest, increasing from about 70 million tonnes in 1974 to approximately 98 million tonnes in 2002. In contrast, the figure for goods transported by pipeline were the lowest, but it saw the figure climb steadily to around 22 million tonnes in 2002, about 4 times that of in 1974(5 million tonnes).
The figure for goods transported by water surpassed the figure for goods transported by rail in 1978, rising to 65 million tonnes in 2002. The figure for goods transported by rail fluctuated, dropping to approximately 28 million tonnes in around 1995, after which it rose to 42 million tonnes in 2002.
Overall, it was commoner transport goods by road and water than by rail and pipeline between 1974 and 2002, but there were more and more people who transported goods by pipeline.
