Question - Science has done more harm than good in the way people live. Some people argue otherwise.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The effect of science on human well being is often viewed to be beneficial, while some people argue otherwise, believing that it retards the quality of life. This essay agrees that science has a positive effect on the way people live. Analysing the effect of science in transportation, health and communication will show this.

Firstly, with the invention of cars, ships and aeroplane, the way people travel and do business has improved. Prior to this inventions, humans usually travelled by walking or riding on horses. These method of transportation was slow and physically tasking. Modern transportation has also positively affected global trade, more countries can now do businesses swiftly. For example, a study done in the University of Bremen, Germany in 2009 showed that prior to the use of air cargo and ships, international trade was only limited to the neighbouring countries, as against the intercontinental trade that has evolved with the use of ships and aeroplane to deliver goods and services. Thus, making it clear that science has improved our standard of living.

Secondly, science has brought about modern advances in health and medicine. The development of antibiotics and productions of medical imaging devices are some benefits of science. Infections can now be effectively fought, people can now access x- ray machines, ultrasound machines and do minimally invasive surgeries. For instance, the mortality rate prior to the invention of penicillin in the 18th century was at 90% according to the British medical journal, this is in sharp contrast with 5% mortality rate seen with the use of antibiotics. Again, showing the benefits of science in human well being.

Finally, the way people communicate has greatly improved with technological advancement attributed with science. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and electronic messengers now enable people communicate in real time at different locations, messages can now be sent across the globe within seconds, which was not achievable in the era of no technological devices. In cases of emergencies, at the dial of a button help would be on its way. Looking at telephone for example, I was once in dire need of money to pay for my bus fare after I had lost my wallet. I simply made a call to my friend who lives around and he was at the bus stop to meet me up in no time to help out with the fare.

In conclusion, after analysing the advances it has made in transportation, health and communication, it is clear that science has been beneficial to man and its benefits can not be over emphasised. It is also foreseeable that more will be done in the science field, with the hope of making living more enjoyable.
