The best way to reduce the number of traffic accidents is to raise age
limit for the younger drivers and lower age limit for the aged ones. Do
you agree?
It is generally accepted that road accidents have increased in the last few decades. The reasons for this increase can be many but it is agreed that such accidents can be reduced if age limit for young drivers is increased, and for older people it is increased. This argument will be explained in the following paragraphs.
For young people, the age limit should be increased because their temperament and attitude towards importance of life is not that mature. Young people, especially teenagers, take driving as fun rather than a serious and crucial matter. Inspired by hollywood movies, where they watch action heroes performing different stunts, they try to mimic the same situation or activity in real life as well. Another important reason, in my personal point of view and also supported by statistics, is the increasing trend of drinking alcohol. Although governments, all over the world, try to impose the legislations to inhibit such events, by putting ban on driving while drinking alcohol or one must have a certain level of alcohol in the blood. In spite of all such efforts, accidents do occur and young drivers are mostly found drunk. Therefore an increase in age limit will help to reduce such tragic events.
As for as older people are concerned, decreasing age limit can also reduce the number of accidents. However the impact of such legislation may not be that evident as it would be by increasing the age limit for young people. The reason for this is that old people still are more careful while driving compared to young people. But in certain cases where vision is more critical while driving, that may be one of the many factors, dictates the aged people may not be suitable to drive. Physical strength is also an important factor while driving. It may not be important in normal driving on normal roads, but become considerable if one has to drive on longer distances and difficult to drive areas (for example hilly areas). Therefore decreasing the age limit for older people should be effective to counter the increasing trend of road accidents.
From the non serious attitude of young people towards driving and decrease in physical strength of older people, it can be concluded that age limit increase for young people and age limit decrease for older people should be a good and fruitful strategy. This way we can hope for a better life of our young and older generation.
