In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?
It is noticeable that the overall population is getting weight, while inversely people’s health and fitness are decreasing. Scientists believe that the eating pattern and the frequency of physical exercises together play important roles in these problems.
Food containing high calories has been proved to be the direct contributor to overweight and obesity. At the old days, it needed great efforts to obtain high-energy food, i.e. honey and sugar, so naturally people were less likely to become fat. In contrast, modern people have easy access to all kinds of high calorie products, for example chocolate, candy and soft drink, as a result, it is not surprised that the average weight of people is rising. Theoretically, if the excess calories are consumed by regular workout, people can maintain their original weight; unfortunately, many adults tend to rest at home rather than take up sports in holidays.
Nutritionists highly recommend high-fiber and low-calories diet to the public, in order to control the combined overweight and obesity prevalence. Meanwhile, compulsory nutrition labeling should be implemented by government, so that consumers are able to select healthy food. Building more sports facilities near major residences can also encourage residents participate in exercises. More importantly, school should be responsible for teaching students the importance of regular exercise and helping the youth form the habit of sports, only in such a way can the next generation stay fit and health.
Weight control and health management have never been easy. Nothing but perseverance in proper diet and exercises can ensure a fit and healthy body. Beside personal efforts, government and school can contribute to the improvement of public health and fitness.
