Some employers reward members of staff for their exceptional contribution to the company by giving them extra money. This practice can act as an incentive for some but may also have a negative impact on others.
To what extent is this style of management effective?
Are there better ways of encouraging employees to work hard?
No one can deny that motivating employees is important however, there are various ways of accomplishing it. Some employers like to reward their workers with financial bonuses as a sign of gratitude for special efforts and contribution to the company. It is a subject for debates whether such practice is the best form of motivation. In my opinion additional income is a logical way of motivation, which is effective up to some extent.
First of all, money is the reason why some people work in the first place. Even though there may be supplementary causes involved, most employees are driven by the urge to earn money and pay their bills. Rationally thinking, a bonus system is similar to evolution. The better the worker is and the more he benefits the company, the more money he or she should get. However, companies these days usually have more than one employee and this competition to earn more can sometimes have negative effects. For instance, if a single employee is motivated , but by doing so five others are demotivated, consequently the results will fall.
Secondly, some people are indeed money-driven, however others value different means of admiration more than extra finances. There have been cases of companies, which awarded their most valuable employees with donations to a charity. The better the results were, the more money would be contributed. In this case employees were more motivated, since the reason of their efforts was selfless.
In conclusion, motivating people with money can be a good idea with some people, however there are alternative ways of increasing employee’s will to work, which can be as or even more effective.
