Do you feel the effects of tourism are more positive or negative for the host country?

It is often argued that tourism can have a negative effect on the host country. However, taking into account the popularity of tourism worldwide, it is felt that tourism has more pros than cons for the host country. These are being discussed in the succeeding paragraphs.

Firstly, tourism increases economic activity in the host country. Increased economic activity creates more jobs, industries and wealth for the host nation. In countries, such as Thailand, tourism industry is the major contributor to the country’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product). Thailand also has a good foreign exchange reserve since majority of the tourists are from overseas, who bring in a lot of foreign currencies. Furthermore, to boost tourism, some countries have set up cities only for tourists, since they believe tourism is a flourishing business. Las Vegas, for instance, was set up in the Nevada desert as a city for entertainment. Every year, it attracts thousands of tourists worldwide, who visit this city for its exquisite hotels, marvellous casinos and innumerable entertainment avenues.

Secondly, through tourism, the host nation can show case their culture and tradition to the visiting citizens of foreign countries. This popularises the culture of the host country in other nations, which helps in attracting new visitors every year. The resultant outcome is friendly ties of host countries with other nations.

Ominously, too much of tourist activity can have adverse effect on the ecology and environment of certain regions of the host country. For example, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, or the jungles of Africa; too much human activity has affected the ecology of both these places.

In conclusion, tourism provides positive effect for the host country through several tangible benefits. Even though there are chances of environmental damage due to increased tourism, it can be avoided by the host nation through stricter law and legislation.

Hi Somnil,

The word length is long and however, your negative side explanation is not clear.
You could have said that, sometimes a tourist destination develops a negative image by itself with the help of different experiences visitors had. For example. Bali , a major tourist destination in Indonesia according to many Australians is the most bad place to visit because of the overall view that , every one Australian dies in Bali every day. As a consequence , it limits not only Australians tourists but also many other visitors across the world to go and visit Bali.

I hope you can understand what I am trying to convey.

Thanks
Argho

Note: Great Barrier Reef is one the major destination for tourists who visits Australia. For your information, it contributes to the Australian fish industry because of the major presence of salmons which originates from there.. So you cant say that, it effects the ecology and environment. If you really wanna mention this, back up with good reason or you may consider my explanation which I have given..

In conclusion, tourism provides positive effect for the host country through several tangible benefits. Even though there are chances of environmental damage due to increased tourism, it can be avoided by the host nation through stricter law and legislation.
