The graph illustrates how countries of residence of international students in Australia was changing between 1982 and 2000.

Overall, there was a steady remain in the period from 1982 to 1987. After that time, the number of students rose strongly in spite of the fitful fluctuations and sharply decreased from 1997 to 1999.

As can be seen from the graph, Malaysia made up the highest proportion, at just under 10,000 students during the time 1982 to 1990. While Indonesia, Hong Kong and Singapore had nearly the same amounts of visitor arrivals for education, between 1,000 and 3,000 students each.

On the contrary, the number of overseas students rose considerably over the next 10 year period, except for Hong Kong. Singapore still continued to grow gradually to account for roughly 20,000 students in 2000. However, the others climbed up to a new peak in 1997 and 1998, then jumped down in the subsequent year. By 2000 of the reported period, Indonesia came top at approximately 23,000 students.
