Imagine a world without clean water, bare minimum requirement for human survival. Unfortunately, in the recent years, water pollution is the gravest danger faced by mankind. Rampant industrialization and carefree attitude towards environment has escalated the problem, making water unfit for human consumption in many areas. Its high time to resort to desperate measures to control this problem or it can have catastrophic effects.
Since the dawn of industrial revolution, industries use water bodies to dispose liquid industrial waste; untreated toxic waste and industrial effluents are dumped into lakes, rivers. Also, sewers in many cities ultimately end in fresh water lakes or rivers. These lakes and rivers are lifeline for many living in the nearby areas. For instance, polluted Ganges water is used daily by millions living in India for – irrigation, daily chores, and even human consumption. Moreover, this polluted water, eventually, ends up in human food chain through crops irrigated with polluted water and contaminated underground water, having adverse effects on people living in the vicinity. For example, 85% of children living in Malwa region have been reported with high uranium levels due to ashpond of several thermal plants in the region.
However, this problem can be controlled by swift proactive actions. First of all, Industries need to setup waste treatment plants to remove toxic materials and make provisions to dispose the waste properly. Large scale awareness campaigns will help make people aware of the situation. Additionally, government needs to forge strict laws and enforce them stringently.
So, in a nutshell, the menace of water pollution needs our immediate attention as this malignant tumor has already spread across various parts of mother earth. However, if all parties were to take responsibility, this problem can be controlled and we can present our future generations with precious gift of clean and pure water.
