many businesses now ban smoking from all offices and governments prohibit it in all public places. This is a good idea but it has restricted our freedom. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Tobacco can be considered as a drug due to its properties of addiction. Apart from that, finding of hazards in smoking made many countries to opt for a ban in public smoking. It is believed that such a movement is positive in nature and it should be welcomed for the sake of humanity. This view will be analyzed by looking into the serious side effects of smoking in society.
First of all, by meaning freedom, it is the right of an individual to live without hurting other members in a society. However, while considering the prohibition of public smoking, one cannot argue that it is an invasion into the freedom, as smoking is hazardous to general public. For instance, it has been confirmed by US studies that passive smoking causes major health problems even in a non-smoker. Therefore, public smoking should be made prohibited by law to protect non-smoking members of a community. From this, it is evident that ban on public smoking is not against the right of freedom.
Secondly, a healthy society could be built once the smoking, the social evil, is controlled. For example, it is well known that tobacco is the major cause of death in countries like India, UK, USA and etc... Therefore, by implementing law to stop public smoking, government can discourage many people to avoid smoking habits from the hefty punishments for law disobedience. Thus, it is clear that a control on public smoking will eventually benefit the health of whole members in a country.
To conclude, by forbidding people to smoke outside, government is not only protecting the right of freedom but also building a healthy society. So, now it is clear that why the concept of banning public smoking is welcomed.
