Question: Some people say the Olympic Games don't have a role to play in the 21st century. Do you agree or disagree? Give your own opinions
The Olympic Games have been a long standing tradition of athletic excellence. It is an event much sought after even by non sports enthusiasts.
I would disagree with the notion that it doesn't have a role to play in this century. Firstly, Athletics encourage discipline, sportsmanship and dedication to the craft of sports. Living in an era of vast technological expansion that is available right at the palm of your hands, is not always a good thing. Myriad problems relating to health issues and declining moral values are becoming more rampant.
Athletes contribute to addressing these problems as hailed role models of healthy and active lifestyles. They encourage certain values, for example: perseverance, determination, and most importantly, strict discipline. They give hope to those who have the skill or talent but don't have the money. With slogans like: resort to sports and not to drugs, they give the youth a chance to convert their energy into something more useful.
Another point is that, the Olympic Games boosts Tourism in the host country. Countries look forward to this event although preparations could be very costly. Preparations could range from massive clean up drives to drastic renovations and even drastically resort to new infrastructures.
The influx of tourist imply a boost in the business sector and therefore, a potential growth in economy. It attracts more investors; as well as encourage new business ventures.
This worldly acclaimed event temporarily unites us as citizens of the world. As we all tune in to the results of the sporting events, we are distracted from the war and chaos presently going about. We set aside our differences as we chose our favorite games and players. We have a sudden common topic of interest to talk about in school, work places and the social media. It could mean you get to talk to someone you ordinarily wouldn't talk to.
In summary, The Olympic Games play not just any role but an important one in the continued progress of different sectors including health, economy, tourism and even world peace. Its indispensable contribution could not simply be ignored. I hope that future generations would continue this tradition and recognize the value of sports and athletics.
