The pie charts compare the main factors why people migrated in and out of the U.K. in 2007.

It is clear that the main reason for moving, both immigration and emigration, was for employment purposes.

The most common reason of migration to and from the U.K. in 2007 was for definite job, 30 percent for immigrants and 29 percent for emigrants. The second highest factor influencing the migration to UK was for formal study, almost a quarter, whereas only 4 percent, lowest proportion for emigration, decided study to other country.

A 12 percent immigrants came to UK to look for a job, while just under a quarter, 22 percent, had left the UK for the same reason. The proportion of those moving to join a family member was quite similar for immigration and emigration, at 15 percent and 13 percent, respectively. A significant number of people (32 percent) gave "other" reasons and did not give reason why they emigrated, this accounted for only 17 percent with regards to immigration.
