July 26 task 2 question. pls check

Post by SaraZh »

Some people think that environmental problems are too big for individuals to solve. Others, however, believe that the problems cannot be solved if individuals do not take actions. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Environmental degradation has become a world-wide issue. While many environmentalists attempt to get individuals’ involvement in the protection of the environment, some people argue that it would do little to prevent the environmental deterioration. In fact, there is much that individuals can and should do to protect our planet. This essay will discuss how individuals can make a difference to the environment by taking global warming as an example.

As the direct cause of global warming, the emission of greenhouse gases can be significantly reduced by changing the way that people commute and utilise of household energy. First of all, commuters should use public transports such as buses, metros and railways to travel between home and office, instead of driving private cars. In addition to the motor vehicles, fossil fuel power stations are another main source of carbon dioxide. Switching off unnecessary lights and house appliances can effectively reduce the consumption of power, and eventually the production of greenhouse gases.

However, there is an obvious limitation of the preceding environmental protection actions: basically, they are done voluntarily. Motorists may refuse to scarify the convenience of travelling by car, whilst some people may not even realise the detrimental effect of the waste of household energy on the environment. Therefore, it is equally important to have government intervention to tackle the global warming problem, for instance, imposing higher taxes on major greenhouse gases producers, investing into the innovation of green cars and promoting recycling programmes.

In conclusion, everyone can contribute to the protection of environment by simply shifting to a green lifestyle. Meanwhile, governments should play a leading role in the reduction of the sources of pollution.
