The pie chart depicts the causes of land degradation, thus, loosing more productive lands, in percentage, in the period of 1990s. Different regions were affected in disperse rates and that is shown in the table below.
The chart shows that deforestation and over-cultivation have almost the same impact on degradation (28% and 35% respectively),while over-grazing exceeded them by approximately 5%.The impact of unspecific reasons account for 7% only.
The table demonstrates that deforestation has the predominant effect on degradation in Europe with a rate of 9.8%, while over-grazing has this effect on Oceania with a rate of 11.3%. The most influencing factor that causes land degradation in North America is over-cultivation 3.3% and the least was deforestation 0.2%.
In total, Europe was the most affected area by land degradation with a rate of 23%. this percentage decreases to 13% and 5% for Oceania and North America respectively.
