Q - Tobacco mainly in the form of cigarettes, is one of the most widely-used drugs in the world. Over a billion adults legally smoke tobacco everyday. The long term health costs are high - for smokers themselves, and for the wider community in terms of health care cost and lost productivity.

Do government have a legitimate to protect citizens from the harmful effects of their own decisions to smoke , or are such decision up to the individual ?

Answer:
Nowadays “smoking” became a trend among youth. It has been seen as a “Status Symbol” by many. Over a billions of people are smoking tobacco everyday. It certainly cause long term health effects not only to the individual who is smoking but to their families and people close to their vicinity. Based on a recent health survey 8 cancer cases out of 10 cases were found “tobacco” was the main reason.

There are many educational programs and campaign running around in schools and society which helps in educating children and youth on “smoking is injurious to health” by government, NGOs and other local bodies.

Government do play a vital role too. Government can contribute largely by mass publication on ill-effects of tobacco to health in society, setting out the regulations for the tobacco usage like higher age limit, high taxes on smoking products, restricting public places like cinema halls, gardens other children pron areas from smoking and restricting advertising tobacco products in media which creates large impact on people’s lifestyle and by assign higher charges on breaking such rules and adhere to such rules stringently.

Apart from government, its an individual awareness and desire from within to decide on his health and see what negative effects “smoking” brings to him and his family. Individual has to understand the benefits of healthy living and its relation to high productivity and happiness.

In conclusion, though choice of smoking is personal and driven by self-decision, yet government has a responsibility to make public aware by various means and ways on the endanger smoking cause and put high restrictions on it’s consumption to the benefit of the whole civilization.
