Academic Writing Task 2

Post by namd »

In the last 20 years there have been significant developments in the field of information technology (IT), for example the World Wide Web and communication by email. However, future developments in IT are likely to have more negative effects than positive.
To what extent do you agree with this view?

Essay :
The advent of information technology two decades ago has made a huge impact around the world.Since then, the field has been receiving many improvements. While there are claims that these technological advances will be very beneficial in the future, it cannot be denied that these improvements may bring more negative impacts.
It is true that there are several advantages to developing technology. E-mail and social network sites, such as Google Mail or Facebook, has made communication relatively easier as you can now send messages, photos or document files faster and more convenient. Also, the web allows instant and broad access to online newspapers, games, business journals or education materials, which are highly advantageous to students and businessmen. With these benefits, it is obvious that the Internet will continue to be a great asset for humans.
However, its drawbacks should also be taken into consideration. Because of the rapid growth of Internet, most people now spend hours glued to the computer screen while rarely do exercises or engage in social activities face-to-face conversations. This decreases the people's ability to socialize and have fun with their friends and relatives. What is more, the development of technology means that unwanted viruses and websites have also been created, presenting risk to many computers and negatively affect children or even adults should they view these websites.
In conclusion, although information technology will likely bring positive effects in the future, it should be noted that regulations should be made in order to combat the negative effects that developments in this field may produce.
