Many companies ask their employees to wear a uniform at work. Write an essay and answer the following questions
(1) In which type of jobs, wearing a uniform is a good thing?
(2) What are the disadvantages of wearing a uniform at work?
It is true that in many companies, employees need to dress up in specific uniforms while they are on duty. While this is certainly necessary for some professions, there are also some drawbacks which need to be addressed.
Wearing a uniform is essential for those professions where individuals need to serve customers directly. The hotel industry, for example, always asks their employees to wear uniform dresses based on their responsibilities. This is required to help the customers in identifying the right person for their services. For instance, in restaurants customers can easily ask waiters to order their food if they could be identified by their appearance. Another profession where uniform plays a significant role is an airline industry. For such industry, uniform tend to create an identity of the company. It is also a good way to highlight the local culture and in term promoting tourism. Therefore, such service based companies always stress on proper uniforms.
However, wearing a uniform at work has also some demerits. To begin with, for some people, having to wear the same clothes as the people around them is seen as suppressing their individuality and right to express themselves. Adopting a uniform policy may even cause -adverse results in employees. Some people’s desires to remain totally unique may lead them to push the boundaries and can create a friction between staff and management, which can affect the productivity and morale at workspaces. What is more, uniforms could get really expensive, especially for small businesses that cannot always benefit from bulk buying discounts.
In summary, it seems to me that although customer facing employees require wearing a uniform, their adverse effect on company budget and individual’s identity need to be taken care.
