As the number of private cars has increased, so too has the level of pollution in many cities. What can be done to tackle this increasingly common problem?

The issue of the soaring number of private cars in cities, such as Hong Kong and Shanghai, has been gaining more and more attention due to its evident impact on the problem of pollution. However, even though some cities, like Hong Kong, have been attempting to tackle the issue by importing electric vehicles from other countries, an obvious result is yet to be seen. In my opinion, in order to resolve such a deep-rooted issue, the governments are bound to spend a great deal of money purchasing electric vehicles and enhance the quality and convenience of public transport.

For one, replacing vehicles propelled by gasoline with electric ones can significantly lower the emission of greenhouse and detrimental gases. For example, I once stood next to an electric taxi and could not feel any gases being emitted, hence I did not need to stop inhaling to avoid the gases. This makes it clear that electric cars can help tackle air pollution problem by simply cutting down the air pollutants by a considerable amount. Therefore, it can be seen that substituting electric cars for the ones that emit gases is one of the possible means to put an end to the pollution problem.

In addition to this, public transport should also be comprehensively enhanced by, for example, increasing the numbers of buses and trains, since the majority of people who want a private car tend to agree that the transport in their community cannot fully cater to their needs. Take one of my friend’s experience as an instance, as there was no train station or bus stop next to her house, her father hence decided to buy a private car to drive his daughter to school. So, through this example, it can be understood that if transport was more accessible, people would be less likely to have a private vehicle, thereby the number of private cars would decrease and so would the number of pollutants.

After looking at how these policies could help eradicate air pollution caused by privates, it has been proven that, through the above solutions, the emission of air pollutants would be enormously declined, whereby the problem would be tackled.

For one, replacing vehicles propelled by gasoline with electric ones can significantly lower the emission of greenhouse and detrimental gases. For example, I once stood next to an electric taxi and could not feel any gases being emitted, hence I did not need to hold my breath to avoid the gases. This makes it clear that electric cars can help tackle the air pollution problem by simply cutting down the air pollutants by a considerable amount. Therefore, it can be seen that substituting electric cars for petrol and diesel cars is one of the possible means to put an end to the pollution problem.

In addition to this, public transport should also be improved by, for example, increasing the number of buses and trains, since the majority of people who want a private car tend to agree that the transport in their community cannot fully cater to their needs. After looking at how these policies could help eradicate air pollution caused by privately owned cars, it has been proven that, through the above solutions, the emission of air pollutants would be greatly decreased and the problem would be tackled.
