Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.
What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?

As is commonly understood that education play a pivotal role in everyone’s life. Today, majority of universities just focus on their traditional curriculum and feels that providing knowledge to students is their only responsibility. It is argued that institution should provide its graduates both the knowledge and professional skills. This will be proven by analyzing the life of the most successful people in the world as well as how a particular strategy of university can boost the confidence and passion of student to learn.

Firstly, most of the extraordinary people succeeded by getting knowledge and skills during their university life. Take Bill Gates as an example, he got knowledge and skills when he was in Harvard University, and after getting these both things, he didn’t continue traditional curriculum of university and left the university, even he didn’t bother to get degree. Today, Bill Gates is peerless and the richest person of the world, and this all happened only due to practical skills he got during his graduate study. Thus, above example clearly shows that universities should focus on providing professional skills.

Secondly, many graduates during study have future job aspects in back of their mind which can let them down if they think that they are not getting particular skills, and employing a particular strategy by university can boost their confidence and stimulate the learning process. For example, many universities in UK have incited a strategy that if graduates do not get job after 6 months of graduation, university will pay back fees to graduates. This makes the graduates to more focus on their study because they know that university will try his best to provide professional skills which will increase the chances of getting job. Thus, above example clears that providing professional training is important for universities.

After analyzing both arguments, it is believed that providing both knowledge and skills is vital responsibility of university. It is expected that in near future more and more universities all over the world will implement above mentioned strategy of UK’s universities.
