Writing task 2 - languages

Post by paperheart »

Every year several languages die out. Some people think that this is not important because life will be easier if there are fewer languages in the world.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

As we venture into 21st century and globalisation is increasingly emphasised across the world, there is no doubt that more and more languages have become obsolete. There are some people who believe that such issue is not crucial as it will be more simple for people to learn few languages. In my opinion, I completely agree that lesser languages are better for people.

Firstly, globalisation and westernization make it inevitable for people to learn international languages like English, German and French. In this case, the original language will be forgotten and eventually died out. Nevertheless, this would help to reduce unnecessary misunderstanding and confusion between multiple languages. The reason being is that every language has its distinctive phrases and words to express ideas and thoughts, but these phrases might have different meaning in another language. What more to say when the words have dual meanings that will give rise to confusion. For instance, the word “right” has two different meaning,

Secondly, several languages promote uniformity where people will only focus on main languages. With this, it helps to master the language and prevent communication breakdown especially when it involves liaising with foreign parties. Apart from this, we will also be free from discrimination and criticisms where certain languages are said to be inferior and less prominent. For instance, one of the african languages, Khoisan is constantly thought to be less useful as only a fraction of people still converse in this language.

In conclusion, languages are important as it serves as a main communication tool between humans, but we should also accept the fact the progression towards modernization and international intergration. The disappear of minority languages will strengthen few main languages and foster better communication among nations.
