Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.
What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?
Education is a very important part of our lives. Special places like a college or a university provide us with the basic foundation of knowledge. Some people say that the university should be responsible for all the knowledge and skills that are required in a workplace; while others say that the universities should only provide the knowledge for their own sake. In my view, I believe that the university should prepare an individual for all the facets required in a job.
There are two very important reasons for my opinion. Firstly, when a curriculum in a particular university provides all the necessary information to a student required at a workplace in their own field of practice, they become more confident, productive, skilled and professional at whatever task they perform. The environment and transition from a university to an actual work setting becomes more easy and convenient.
Secondly, the student also has the courage to apply the foundation of his skills and knowledge to an unfamiliar setting with less difficulty. For example, when I graduated from a Medical university in Pakistan, I had all the basic knowledge required to work in a hospital setting in Pakistan, but to work in U.S.A or Canada, I was required to gain all the extra knowledge and skills on my own, in order to pass all the Medical licensing exams in North America and work at a hospital. The transition would have been much easier and worthwhile, if my university has took the extra effort to familiarise us with the universal knowledge required in Medicine.
In conclusion, as you can see that it is very important and wise for a university to go the extra mile in order to provide us with the necessary knowledge and skills needed in a working environment.
