Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.

What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?

Some view that universities ought to teach both academic as well as working skills. Others believe university’s key role is to reinforce students with only academic education, without any concern on course’s applicability on corporate environment. In my opinion, I strongly believe any university should teach academic subjects after critical research on each subject’s relevance to employers and industries.Furthermore , I believe universities ought to carry out employment related practical training programs as well.

With regards to the main responsibility of a university, that can be analyzed and explained through different aspects with a spectrum of suggestions. For example ,any university should introduce up to date courses for students where the subjects are fully analyzed by industry experts. It is clear that any employer is willing to recruit a graduate with appropriate knowledge among thousands of applicants. This is essential for any type of course. However universities should invest on sophisticated research for course content before introducing it to university syllabuses.

Likewise, although this is a controversial issue, I believe harnessing graduate talents on practical experience and to apply academic knowledge into practice is indispensable. In the current business context ,students spend at least 4 to 5 years as an undergraduate .For example if students move into employment as soon as finishing academic education they won’t be able to espouse practical skills without proper guidance. In addition to that to mitigate such disappointments universities have a main responsibility to teach students to assimilate corporate disciplines through various workshops as well as internships conducted on university premises by industry experts.

In conclusion, despite people having various views about the main function of the university education, I believe each university ought to diligently analyze and update with each course criteria regularly .Furthermore as can clearly seen from the second example, supporting graduates to follow a solid pre employment training would ultimately help them the compete aggressively once they stepped into the job market.

Hello!

I have had some difficulty understanding your essay. You may be right, but there is one glaring problem that you have overlooked and which may destroy your whole argument. What if the person at university doesn't know what job they want to do or what if the subject they are studying is not the subject that they really want to study in order to get the job they want? To be clear, the former is very common in my country and the latter is very common in countries like China.

You have answered the question, but you seem to think that university is ONLY for people who have a defined career path. I put it to you that, at the age of 18, very few people have much idea about what they will be doing when they are 50. That leaves your argument with a problem.

All the best,
David
